Redbrook

The Old Bakery Apartment is a recently modernised and tastefully decorated ground floor flat, in an imposing nineteenth century building.

It is fully self-contained and non-smoking and occupies a central location, looking out across the rolling village green and the majestic River Wye.  With one double bedroom, it is ideal for a couple.  It has a fully equipped kitchen, and there is a separate lounge/dining room with "FreeSat" TV and video. The modern bathroom has separate bath and shower facilities, and there is a separate WC.

As well as walkers, the village is popular with cyclists, birdwatchers, and those who just want to take some time out and enjoy the countryside.

A local bus, No. 69, runs through the village at regular intervals during the day, between Monmouth and Chepstow. We have had guests who want a car-free holiday travelling by coach or train to Chepstow, and then finishing their journey on the local bus. It stops virtually outside the front door!

On the wider scale, Redbrook is situated close to where the borders of Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire, and Herefordshire meet, each county having its own distinctive countryside and range of attractions. It is all there for our guests to explore – and we are central enough that plenty of adventures can be had on foot, by bicycle (bring your own, or rent one), with the assistance of the bus, or even by canoe from hire locations just outside Redbrook.

To clear up a point which some find puzzling: our part of Redbrook is in Gloucestershire, England, our “Welsh address” notwithstanding. We are within yards of the border with Monmouthshire, and our “local town” is Monmouth. We regard ourselves as being first and foremost in the Wye Valley (where domestic tourism was of course invented), but we are also within the confines of the Forest of Dean, though on the periphery, and where we are the honourable industrial heritage has now come full circle, with the old Redbrook tinplate works reverting (since 1961) to water courses, fields, and housing.

The property benefits from full gas central heating, which is independently controlled within the apartment.  Bed linen and towels are supplied free of charge, and electricity and heating are included in the letting price.  It has its own gated off-street car park, and bicycles can be securely stored if required

Redbrook is situated in the glorious Wye Valley, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Redbrook is unique.  It is the only village in Britain which is in two countries.  This, whilst promoting lively rivalry during Six Nations Competition, also gives visitors a flavour of the history of both nations.

As soon as you cross the old railway bridge, disused for many years, but open to walkers, you are in Wales! Offa’s Dyke and the Wye Valley Walk both run through Redbrook, offering access to two of the most popular long-distance footpaths in the UK. They, and others in the vicinity, can be undertaken in full or in part with the help of the bus service!
